Army of the Ardennes.
Desjardins, division general commanding officer.
The French capture all the fieldworks of
the Merbes camp, which the enemy must
leave under the cannonfire from Grandreng:
the army, led by Desjardins, charges under the fire
from the enemy batteries, shouting: Long live the
Republic.
To cross the Sambre, the grenadiers from the 49th
regiment throw themselves into the water to support the
skirmishers and rout the Bourbon Legion.
The 68th regiment, alone, undergoes an
attack on a bridge by more numerous Austrians but
holds its position.
